Life in Almond Class

Term 5 has been a very exciting one in Year 2!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the continent of ‘Antarctica’ this term. We started the term focussing on writing newspaper reports all about Antarctica. We have learnt so much about the animals that live there, the climate and the seasons they have in Antarctica! We then moved on to learning about Sir Ernest Shackleton who led the Endurance expedition. We have written a wonderful diary entry from his point of view, telling the story of his incredible survival skills and optimism.

At the end of term, we shared some of our writing with the children in Year 6 who have also been studying the topic of Antarctica this term. We loved being able to show off their work and learn some tips and tricks from the Year 6 pros!

As well as doing lots of fantastic writing about Antarctica, the children have also been taught about the geography of the polar regions and the effects of global warming. Our termly ‘Great Debate’ got the children thinking about the effects of tourism on places like Antarctica and we had some very interesting discussions! It has been great to see how much the children’s confidence has grown since our very first term together in September.

We have also been enjoying lots of hands-on learning, such as sculpting clay penguin models in Art, continuing to improve our recorder skills and using Chrome Music Lab in our Computing lessons to create our own music online.

We hope you have an amazing half term and we are all looking forward to seeing you in Term 6 to start our new topic ‘The Great Fire of London’!
