The Grove Primary School

Year 4

Maple and Beech

Year 4 have had a fantastic final term learning all about The Rainforest. Our topic book this term has been ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell and has really captured the children’s interests and imaginations.

In our Writing lessons, we have created factfiles about a chosen animal in the Amazon Rainforest. We researched our animal using non-fiction texts and the IPADS and shared our factfiles with the children in EYFS. We have also written some poetry and participated in the poetry competition and wrote persuasive letters to logging companies in Brazil, considering the impact of deforestation.

In History, we have looked at different explorers such as astronauts, Scott of the Antarctic and Columbus. As part of our learning, we tasted avocado, tomato and pineapple. We learned that these fruits were introduced to Europe after Christopher Columbus’s voyages to the Americas.

In Art and Design, we have been exploring the rainforest and sketching rainforest insects. We have also created a mixed media piece of art where the children have painted and used collage to create a rainforest masterpiece!

In Geography, we have learnt about how Trowbridge has changed over time by locating key landmarks and natural features on a map. We have also drawn a sketch map of the school grounds. Finally, we have explored world maps and identified how location can affect climate.

In Maths, we have had a smorgasbord of achievements. Firstly, all the children had a brilliantly successful in their MTC. They were able to show the remarkable progress they have made and I look forward to them applying this next year. We have covered shapes, statistics and position and direction. The children took part in map reading and could apply their knowledge to orienteering while at Braeside. We have finished the year recapping all our methods of arithmetic. Well done to everyone, you are ready and rearing to go onto Year 5.

In Science, this term we have also worked scientifically by conducting an experiment based on deforestation. We used three bottles one filled with bark, one with compost and one with soil and small flowers. We then poured the same amount of water into each bottle and observed what happened. We learned that the small flowers absorb the most water. We compared the flowers to trees in the rainforest and how, without them, this could lead to a loss of habitat, flash flooding and lack of oxygen.

We hope you have a lovely summer break and want to thank you all for your support this year.
