The Grove Primary School

Year 4

Maple and Beech

Year 4 have had a fantastic second term learning all about The Romans! The children have really settled into life in Year 4 and have impressed many visitors both inside and outside of school with their behaviour and effort in their learning. We feel very proud!

So far, we have learned about what life was like in Britain before the Roman invasion and considered what life was like as a Roman Soldier. We have linked our knowledge of the history of the Romans to our writing and Art this term.

We have created non-chronological reports about Boudicca and written and posted letters home from the viewpoint of a Roman soldier. (Look out for these arriving home in the next few weeks!)

In Art and Design, we have been making Roman coil clay pots. We really enjoyed the process of creating our pots, firing them, glazing them, firing them again, and then seeing the incredible results. The children have shared where they have placed them at home — many proudly displaying them, while some have chosen to gift their pots to relatives. We have also been learning about mosaics from Roman times. We created our own mosaics using tiles and also using paper.

In DT, we designed and made Christmas cards using mechanisms to create movement. We evaluated our making progress and thought about what went well and what we could improve.

In Maths, we have focused on multiplication and division. We started this term exploring the 3, 4 and 9 x table. We then moved onto how we can use our knowledge of the 10x table to calculate multiplying by 11 and 12. These skills have supported the children with their x table knowledge and every week we are seeing the children’s speed and accuracy improve on their practice multiplication check.

In Science, we have focused on Electricity this term. The children have really enjoyed experimenting with the different elements of a circuit and even used them to illuminate some Christmas card designs! We ended the term with an investigation ‘What happens if there is more than one bulb in a circuit?”.

Next term, we are continuing with our Roman topic. To celebrate this, we would like to remind you of our trip to The Roman Baths on Thursday 15th January. We would also like to remind you that for PE in Term 3 and 4, Year 4 will be swimming on a Friday afternoon.

We hope you have a restful break and send our best wishes for the new year.

The Year 4 team.
