The Grove Primary School

Year 4 - Beech Class

Firstly, we would like to celebrate how well the children have settled into Year 4, embracing the new routines and expectations. The children have thoroughly enjoyed our topic ‘It’s a Mystery’ and have shown great enthusiasm and determination within their learning.

In our Writing sessions, we have created fact files about Nessy (AKA the Lock Ness Monster), and devised our own mystery stories inspired by our topic book ‘The Case of the disappearing detective’ by Anthony Read. Once we had published our stories, we celebrated our achievement by visiting Year 2. This gave us an opportunity to read aloud our writing and edit our work.

Throughout our Maths learning, we have focussed on place value. This has been through using place value charts and place value counters. We have also been learning about multiplying and dividing by 10. We have spent lots of time on our times tables and have completed our first in class booklet.

In our Science lessons, we have focused on ‘States of Matter’. This has involved creating our own models of the water cycle and investigating the viscosity of different liquids by having a ‘liquid race’. We also practiced working scientifically by carefully observing different liquids as they change state from solid to liquid.

We have been very fortunate to start the year with our forest school sessions. I know this has been a highlight for the children (and the staff!) and we are keen to continue to use the school woods in different areas of our learning throughout the year. The children have enjoyed working collaboratively to create mandalas, models of their town and rainbows using the different autumnal colours in the school woods. We ended the term with a special treat in the woods – marshmallows toasted on a fire!

In Art and Design, we have been learning about the street artist Banksy. We designed and created our own stencils inspired by his work, and then evaluated Banksy as an artist by discussing his style, techniques, and the messages behind his artwork.

In Geography, we have been learning to locate a range of countries, cities, and towns using an atlas. We have compared similarities and differences between two regions in the UK and identified and studied features of several regions in Scotland. We also discussed the similarities and differences between a region in North America and one in the UK. Additionally, we have sketched maps using a 4-figure reference grid, included symbols, and used a key to represent the different features on our maps.

In PSHE, we have been thinking about ourselves and how we see ourselves. In French, we have consolidated our understanding of greetings and the basics of French. During our Computing sessions, we have learned all about the internet and During R.E, we have consolidated our knowledge of Buddhism.

Our next topic will spread over two terms and is…The Romans! We will be in touch after half term with more details about this, including a trip to The Roman Baths. We hope you have a restful half term!
