Year 3

Lilac and Alder

As we head into the festive period, Year 3 can reflect on an incredible term where they shined brighter than the star on top of our Christmas trees. From learning about what to do in emergency situations, to understanding how to look out for one another, as well as performing so fantastically during the Christmas Concert to our nearest and dearest, this term has been full of many highlights.

At the very start of this term, we celebrated anti-bullying week where we focused on the ‘Power for Good’ and how the children can make simple choices that can have a positive impact on their peers. This culminated in the ever popular ‘Odd Socks Day’ where we were encouraged to celebrate our differences and individuality by wearing a selection of bright, colourful, odd socks.

We were also very fortunate to have a visit from the team at the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Unfortunately, they didn’t arrive in their helicopters but more importantly they were able to talk us through what to do in emergency situations. It was amazing to see how level-headed the children were and knew what to do if they ever encountered someone unconscious. On top of this, we were given a hands on tutorial of how to move people into the recovery position as well as how to respond if someone is choking.

In class, Year 3 were fortunate enough to be part of a Michael Rosen webinar where they were inspired by his creative writing and wowed by ‘Chocolate Cake’. The children very much took this inspiration into their writing as they produced some incredibly descriptive Stone Age stories as well as write detail reports into the different ages throughout Pre-Historic Britain. You will have to ask them about the differences between Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods as their understanding was out of this world!

Across this term, the main focus of our learning has been based on all things Pre-historic Britain! This concluded with our topic day when the children donned their best Stone Age outfits and undertook a range of exciting activities, none more so than our dioramas. The level of creativity left our minds blown and the children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own Stone Age scenes which they couldn’t wait to take home. On top of this, we were able to explore how fossils were made using plasticine and Polyfilla as well as understand how rocks were formed by crushing chocolate together!

Without doubt, this time of year is very much focused on Christmas and the children were really getting into the festive spirit early this year as we were designing and creating our very own Christmas ornaments for the tree. This concluded with the children spending the morning learning (or in some cases teaching) how to cross stich materials to produce their decorations.

The term ended with our annual Christmas performance and what a performance is was. Mr Ball, Miss Murray, Miss Hughes and the entire Year 3 team were bursting with pride at how well they did. It was a fitting end to a fantastic term!
