What a wonderful and busy term it has been in Year One!

Our topic, ‘All Under One Roof’, has helped us learn that families come in all shapes and sizes and are each wonderfully unique. We began the term by exploring ‘The Great Big Book of Families’, which the children found fascinating. We then moved on to ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’, a story we all thoroughly enjoyed. Using this book, the children wrote fantastic sentences about Bill and Janet, and we are incredibly proud of the progress they have made in their writing so far this year.

In Maths, we have explored addition, subtraction and 2D and 3D shapes. The children have worked hard to understand the relationship between adding and subtracting and have been learning fact families with growing confidence.

In Art and Design, we began the term by making clay poppies. The children loved moulding and shaping the clay and, after it dried, they carefully painted their creations. They were very proud of their finished poppies!

Throughout the term, the children have also been busy completing their Continuous Provision challenges each week. We have been so impressed by their creativity, teamwork, and determination. They have truly demonstrated our school value of endeavour.

As Christmas approached, our RE lessons focused on the importance of giving. The children brought in gifts they had received and talked about how those gifts made them feel. Working in small groups, they created story sticks to help retell the Christmas story and remember the gifts given to baby Jesus.

A huge highlight of the term was our nativity, ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ The children worked incredibly hard to learn the songs, words, and actions, and performed with such enthusiasm. Their singing and dancing were brilliant — everyone was so impressed and incredibly proud of our amazing Year Ones!
