Life in Larch Class

Year One have loved their ‘Our Amazing Planet’ topic and we have learnt and achieved so much in the last six weeks!

We started the term with fun Pancake Races on the playground with EYFS.

In English we have made our own lift-the flap books about our planet explaining in our own words why our world is warming up, how our climates are changing and how we can all help to save our planet. The results were fantastic and we loved sharing our books with EYFS.

We also learned to follow instructions to plant cress seeds – with varying success! Then we wrote our own instructions to follow when we used cress to make a sandwich. Most of us thought our sandwich was delicious!

In Maths, we have been learning about place value within 50. We have also been learning about different types of measurement focusing on length, height, capacity and weight. We have been using and understanding language such as longer than, shorter than, taller than, heavier than, lighter than in the right context. We have learnt to measure in centimetres using a ruler and learnt to use balance scales to compare the mass of two objects.

We have become very passionate about our environment and we understand the importance of putting our litter in the bin or taking it home with us. In Geography, we did a litter pick around our school grounds. We have made posters to remind everyone where litter must go – look out for these around our school!

In Art, we have been exploring different types of printing. We have been learning to do block printing, monoprinting and wax relief printing.

In DT we have made fabulous Bee Hotels out of old materials which we have recycled. The children really loved this idea and we are hoping some of the bees will come and stay! We also made beautiful Mother’s Day cards for our wonderful Mums!

There is nothing more ‘amazing’ than seeing a rainbow so we rounded off our topic with a ‘Rainbow Day’, coming to school dressed in the colours of the rainbow. We had such a busy day, working together to create rainbow poems, investigating the number seven, observing how we can make a rainbow from Skittles and mixing colours to paint our own rainbows.

We hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and we are looking forward to starting our ‘Who’s Who?’ topic in Term 5.
